The Big Summer Read 2025

23rd Jun 2025
We’re excited to let you know that The Big Summer Read 2025 is launching across all public libraries in Northern Ireland from Friday 27 June to the end of August!

This year’s theme is Time Travel, with 66 days of exciting reading adventures designed to help children explore different periods in history and imagination – from the prehistoric past to magical kingdoms and beyond.

The aim? To keep children reading over the summer and support their literacy development in a fun, free and meaningful way.

Here’s a quick overview: Big Summer Read 2025 Highlights:

• Designed for children aged 4–11
• Read for 15 minutes a day
• Tackle 66 flexible reading adventures
• Make 4 visits to the library
• Free packs, events and activities in all branches
• Completion certificate for everyone who takes part.

This year’s Big Summer Read also encourages children to build a daily reading habit – research shows it takes around 66 days to form a new habit, and our goal is to help children develop a love of reading that lasts long after the holidays are over.

We’re also inviting parents and carers to join in by reading just 15 minutes a day, helping to set a positive example and create a reading culture at home.

For more information, families can visit librariesni.org.uk or call into their local library.
